GOOD HEALTH AND MEDICINE

The following two excerpts are from the 'Ask Dr Judy' column in Good Health and Medicine magazine.

Ask Dr Judy

Emotional Roller Coaster

Q “I spend my days on an emotional roller-coaster. My eyelids swell up regularly. I am chronically constipated and I sweat profusely, and that’s just some of it. Can you help?” Suzie, Vic

A “The best way for you to understand what’s going on is in terms of a system of personality profiling which identifies four distinct personality types – Sanguines, Cholerics, Melancholics and Phlegmatics. As with all things, each group can demonstrate very “positive” emotional and physical character traits and/or some very “negative” ones. You are a pure Phlegmatic. On the “positive” side – the truth of who you are – you’re adaptable, patient, friendly, diplomatic, witty, contented, pleasant and balanced. You, however, mostly live the dark side of this personality – the false or programmed you – fearful, unenthusiastic, indecisive, aimless and compromising.

There is one sure way to transform your life and that is with a particular form of yoga known as Bikram Yoga. It’s performed in a heated room almost sauna-like in its condition. One class a week for six weeks will work absolute wonders for rediscovering, living, being and celebrating the very real and wonderful “true” you”.

Chronic Fatigue

Q “I’ve had chronic fatigue for years. I am out of a job, out of money and just about out of hope”.
John, NSW

A “There are many conditions associated with fatigue:

1 Depression 2 Chronic joint/muscle pain 3 Myopathies (pathology of the muscles and muscular system) and fibromyalgia 4 Neuropathies (pathology of the nerves and nervous system) 5 Liver dysfunction 6 Cardiac (heart) dysfunction and cardiomyopathies (heart muscle “weakness”) 7 Pancreatic dysfunction 8 Kidney dysfunction 9 Blood sugar disturbance, which can be caused by pancreatic dysfunction (though not the only cause) including hypoglycaemia (low sugar) and diabetes (high sugar) 10 Cancer 11 Thyroid dysfunction 12 Respiratory dysfunction including asthma and chronic lung conditions such as emphysema.

Of this list of 12, you have six (2, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 12) and your major contributor is kidney dysfunction. Please go see your local GP and ask for a referral to a renal physician who will put you through some comprehensive testing and thereafter offer some relevant therapeutic options, including diet. Once your kidney function has been restored, your next step is to improve your cardiac and respiratory function by means of a carefully planned and supervised exercise programme. Within six to 12 months you will have regained sufficient oomph to energise the rest of your journey back to complete wellness”.
